Josh, who should I vote for in the upcoming election and why?

Dear Anonymous,

My vote goes to the person who is thinking about the long run. There are quick fixes that are temporary and superficial. They are popular, but they don’t look at the big picture. Voters are this way as well. There are those who would look at one single issue or one single vote or one single sentence the candidate has said, and they will judge (and usually misjudge) everything else about that person. There is a scriptural term for this, it is called making a man “an offender for a word” (Isaiah 29:21; 2 Nephi 27:32), anyone who would draw such conclusions on so little evidence would be described by that same scripture as a “terrible one.”

Anyway, look at the big picture. Look at the long term, think of the consequences of our leaders’ actions in 5, 10, 20, 50 years down the road. Come tomorrow, today will be yesterday by then. So there’s not too much need to fret about what will benefit us just for today.

Have a great election year.

Maxwell, in his book “A More Excellent Way” quotes Eric Hoffer who, “sees the masses as being vulnerable to manipulation in connection with mass movements because where people lack hope but are not willing to work for gradual progress they seem willing to sublimate themselves to a leader or a cause which purports to offer sudden, spectacular changes.” [18]
